What Is an Electrical Emergency?
An electrical emergency is a fault or incident that creates an immediate risk of electric shock, burns, fire or damage to a property.
Warning signs may include smoke, sparks, burning smells, hot sockets, exposed wires, repeated power cuts and unusual sounds from electrical fittings.
Some faults may appear small at first. However, heat, buzzing, crackling noises and repeated tripping can show that a dangerous problem is developing inside an appliance, behind a wall or within the consumer unit.
How Common Are Electrical Emergencies in UK Homes?
Fire and rescue services attended 170,597 fires in England during the year ending March 2026. This was a 19% increase compared with the previous year.
These incidents included 39,859 fires in homes and other buildings. There were also 184 fire-related deaths in dwelling fires, representing 72% of all fire-related deaths during the year.
Across all types of fire, there were 6,848 non-fatal casualties. Of these, 2,998 people needed hospital treatment.

Separate research found that 1,140 accidental electrical fires involving common white goods occurred in England during 2024. This was equal to more than three fires each day. The products included washing machines, tumble dryers, dishwashers, fridge freezers and combined washer-dryers.

What Should You Do During an Electrical Fire?
An electrical fire may begin inside an appliance, plug, socket, cable or consumer unit. Warning signs may include smoke, flames, sparks, a burning smell or loud crackling noises.
Warn everyone in the property and leave immediately if there are flames, heavy smoke or any doubt about whether it is safe to remain inside. Close doors behind you where possible, stay outside and contact the emergency services from a safe location.
Never return to collect belongings and do not attempt to fight a fire that is spreading.
Never use water on an electrical fire. Water conducts electricity and could cause a serious or fatal electric shock. Only use a suitable fire extinguisher when you have been trained, the fire is very small and you have a clear escape route.
What Should You Do if Someone Receives an Electric Shock?
An electric shock can cause burns, muscle damage, breathing difficulties, heart problems and internal injuries. A person may have a serious injury even when there are no clear marks on their skin.

What Does a Burning Smell from a Socket Mean?
